feel like i should weigh in because i was up to see it post. i'll say more later i promise. last year i commented on how my movie watching for the year would focus on 100-200, because i felt that those movies peaked my interests most. and they did. now, most of my year's viewing will be centered on what i haven't seen from 21-60. That's where I think the list shines.

and i'm glad i got to see you see a top 10 film. if i hadn't seen it before i'd say it was a film about your ankle.

I've only given the list an initial glance, but my first thought- "Willy Wonka..." at #6..disgraceful. Was no one else deeply disturbed by Veruca Salt turning into a blueberry?!?! more later...

Rob, I couldn't agree more. The biggest problem with this year's list is that adding more people who haven't seen the same movies only moves what we've all seen up to the top, ahead of the best films some os uf haven't seen.

Keep the comments coming.

I have seen 97 of the top 200 (52 of the top 100) More importantly, I have added about 45 movies to our netflix queue...its going to be a long summer

Okie thanks for giving me a reason to have the most unproductive week at work ever. My first thought was I'm kind of astonished to see Fargo, the best movie of the 90's (not a fact, just an opinion) fall 60 spots from last year and off the top 100.

Second, the list ended up being a tad heavy on the Wes Anderson - 3 movies in the top 50? That's more than Hitchcock, Fellini, Allen and Scorcese combined. Still I'm surprised by how good the list is from top to bottom, even the movies in the bottom quarter are great. I'll reserve any comment on Willy Wonka as a top 10 caliber movie until I actually see it.

A minor quibble but since this list is soon entering the Geocities canon, the Bergman movie in the second 100 is Winter Light not Winter Night.

I struggled with the Wes Anderson thing myself. They're all great movies, but putting them all in my top 50 would have been like having three Blur albums in my top 50, so I left Bottle Rocket off, kept the Royal Tenenbaums in the fifties, and threw all my praise for Wes Anderson at Rushsmore, which is the best of the three. But like Beatles albums (a huge stretch, I know), everyone has their favorite and they all move up to the top of the composite list.

As for Fargo, I was suprised too. A sampling of the movies that just missed the cut:

101. Shakespeare in Love
102. Reservoir Dogs
103. The Usual Suspects
104. Trainspotting
111. Being John Malkovich
112. Fargo
114. The Big Lebowski

Some of the best movies of the 90's, and some definite group favorites, were relegated to the filler in favor of Big Fish and The Station Agent, which are fresh in our minds, and Full Metal Jacket and The Sound of Music, which we're so programmed to respect.

You're right about the list offering good films right into the 80's and 90's, but I'm not convinced the movies in the top quarter are any better than those in the bottom quarter... or the filler.

I agree with Rob and Bryan that many of the films in the bottom 100 have probably not been seen by all of the participants. I have seen 73 of the top 100 (32 in the bottom half and 41 of the top half), yet I have only seen 54 of the 101-200 films. Hmmm..83 movies to watch before next year. Could happen.
